Dr. Falla stated the goal of creating a Hand Treatment was, “We wanted to plump them up and put moisture back into them and stop the damage from continuing and even the skin tone.”
The Best ingredients Are the Most Temperamental
According to Dr. Falla, the best ingredients are the most temperamental. Skin, Health, Beauty readers may already be aware that peptides and other better ingredients break down easily in UV rays which is why many products will say to use them at night. Better ingredients also break down when combined with the wrong ingredients.
Replenish the Skin’s Natural Barrier Function
Dr. Falla and his research department faced a big challenge. They wanted to replenish the natural barrier function of the skin. For the plumping the Rodan + Fields team chose a saracin peptide, and to help even the skin tone immediately they added an optical brightener to create an immediate, demonstrable effect.
Adding Ascorbic Acid
However, to put the moisture back into the hands, Dr. Falla’s team wanted to put in a high dose of Vitamin C/Ascorbc Acid to increase the NMS, or natural moisturizing function of the hands. Unfortunately, Vitamin C is not stable in the liquid format Hand Treatment needed to add the peptides and other key ingredients.
Dr. Falla said the solution was Rodan + Fields famous multi-med therapy. “Let’s split them into 2 parts,” was the thought.
“So what’s the other part of this? This is the stick,” he explained, pointing out the 4% ascorbic acid content of the stick. “In a skin product, in a lotion or a cream in any aqueous format, you cannot do this. Ascorbic acid is unstable in water. so what we had to do was put it in a stick that doesn’t contain water. Now the combination of vitamin C in a stick that doesn’t have water is very stable. There are very few products you would ever see that have this concentration of vitamin C.”

The Vitamin C Concentration That Works
Falla stated that the reason Rodan + Fields wanted that concentration was, “This is the concentration that works. You could have a fancy scented, thick lotion and put 4% vitamin C in, but it would never have worked. The way other companies do it is to put in a lower concentration of vitamin C which doesn’t ruin the product or go bad – it stays in there, but it’s not active and the concentration is too low a concentration. This is the only way you can combine the right amount of vitamin C in a product that can deliver it, restoring the youthful qualities of the skin by stimulating the collagen and elastin.
Instant Moisturizing Effect
Falla indicated that applying the stable Vitamin C in the stick on top of the aqueous Hand Treatment activated the vitamin C for an almost instantaneous moisturizing effect. “It’s amazing how quickly you can moisturize your skin. You just put this on and you see a difference immediately,” Dr. Falla said.
