What Does ‘Aging Gracefully’ Mean to You?

Senescence

Senescence is the state or process of aging. Often I hear people refer to “aging gracefully” (or ageing gracefully for you in the UK), but what does that really mean?

Aging Gracefully

Personally, I think “aging gracefully” means accepting the process of aging and understanding the process is a natural part of God’s plan and not something to cause depression and anger. Aging should be that time in life when as the body slowly weakens, the spirit becomes stronger and more beautiful. However, accepting the process of aging does not mean allowing the down side to take over your life.

The Serenity Prayer

“God, Give us the grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
Courage to change the things which should be changed,
And the wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.”

Fighting Premature Aging

While there are things about the aging process we cannot change, there are some things we CAN change. I think “aging gracefully” also means preventing and eliminating the signs of premature aging. There is nothing graceful about brown spots, saggy skin, flabby muscles, early wrinkles, pot bellies and letting oneself go. This applies to men and women and has little to do with makeup or vanity.

Good Health Is Beautiful

Good health is beautiful, and healthy skin is beautiful. But inner health that results in a ready smile, cheerful spirit and positive attitude are even more beautiful.

What You Can Do to Age Gracefully

Aging gracefully doesn’t mean you have throw your hands up in defeat nor does it mean you have to wear makeup, color your hair, get expensive manicures, or spend money at spas. There are common-sense things you can do to help yourself age gracefully.

Graceful Senior Health

You can stay active. You can walk or jog around your block every day. You can eat more raw fruits, vegetable and whole grains. You can give up or reduce desserts. You can drink more water and less sugar.

Graceful Senior Skin Care

You can wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day. You can eliminate brown spots and dull skin; get rid of premature wrinkles and saggy skin; calm rosacea, psoriasis and other sensitive skin problems;  and keep your own natural skin healthy and radiant. You can even change the DNA of your skin cells at home. If you want to know more, just ask me or visit Rodan + Fields.

Graceful Senior Spiritual Care

Keep a close circle of friends and family. As loved ones pass away, it is even more important to stay active in church and other places of fellowship to keep good people and healthy relationships in your life. Meditate. Pray. Cultivate a relationship with God.

Enjoying Golden Years

I plan to accept and enjoy my fast-approaching “golden” senior years and to be a good steward of the mind, soul, spirit, body, and skin God has given me. To me, that is aging gracefully. What does it mean to you? Feel free to leave comments below.
