If you or someone you are with gets honey trapped in their windpipe, call 911 immediately.

Recently, I made the unfortunate decision to squeeze some honey from my cute little plastic bear dispense directly into my mouth. Since it was the last of the honey, I tilted my head back and squeezed. Somehow, the honey went straight into my windpipe. I knew not to panic and immediately tried to cough, but when I expelled the air in my cough, I couldn’t inhale any back in. I calmed my desire to keep gasping and tried to breathe in through my nose. I couldn’t get air in that way, either. No air came in through my nose at all. My airway was completely blocked.

I tried gasping, sucking in air  hard as I could, and a very little air came in, but the honey closed right back up and actually, seemed to be drawn in deeper. From gasping, I had enough air to cough out a little, so I coughed as hard as I could, but the honey closed back up and again, and I could not breathe. You can’t cough or clear your throat without air in your lungs, and I could not draw air at first, so normal choking advice didn’t seem to apply in my case.

I considered the self-administered Heimlich Maneuver, but I was afraid that a violent expulsion of air would only move the honey up and that the following sharp intake of breath would draw the honey back deeper into my windpipe. A minute or so passed during which time I only took in the smallest amounts of air by gasping in and coughing out, and I started to “see stars” as they say, so I dialed 911.

I was going to ask what to do to get the honey out, but at first I couldn’t even speak. Slowly, between attempts to cough out the honey and suck in a little air, I was able to gasp out a few facts: my name, the fact I was choking on honey. I gasped out, “What should I do? Can’t breathe” and the only advice the 911 call center had was not to eat or drink until after the ambulance arrived and I had been seen by the EMTs.

In a short time, the fire and ambulance EMTs were at my door. By this time, I was still coughing and chocking, but I could walk and talk, although talking was still laborious. I told them, gaspingly, that since I was now able to get some air in, I was not as worried and didn’t want to go to the emergency room. They took my blood pressure and stuck my finger in some small device. When I could finally talk a little better, I asked them what I should have done. They said asking the 911 call center for any advice was a mistake, and that I should have Googled for advice.

Since I was now able to talk and the most dangerous time had passed, the EMTs told me to drink water and suggest cough drops since I now had the raspy, wheezing voice of someone with bronchitis.

What Not to Do if You Are Choking on Honey

Don’t Waste Time Googling — By the Time You Research on Google, You Could Be Dead

Twenty-four hours after my ordeal, I decided to Google various combinations of “choking on honey” and “honey in windpipe” and discovered — absolutely nothing. I spent two hours searching different ways and found honey used as a resource over and over for coughing and choking, but nothing on what to do if honey was the cause of the choking.

Don’t Waste Time Calling Emergency Rooms – Emergency Rooms Do Not Offer Advice Over the Phone

I tried calling the emergency room at St. Thomas hospital but a recorded message informed they didn’t offer medical advice over the phone. I called Vanderbilt Hospital and was transferred to the Otolaryngology Department to the Ear, nose & throat specialists. The person in their triage department said she wasn’t a nurse and couldn’t tell me what to do, but she took my number.

Don’t Waste Time Calling Walk-In Clinics — Walk-In Clinics & Health Centers Are Not Set Up for Choking

I called several Nashville health care clinics today and asked them what they would do if someone was choking on honey.

• Minute Clinic at CVS “We do not do choking services at all”
• Take Care Clinic at Walgreens  “That would be out of their scope of practice”
• Lentz Health Center “That is not something we would treat here. We deal in specific things here, mostly testing.”
• Healthcare Center at West Meade Place “We’re not an emergency facility. Our nurses are specialized in geriatric care.”

Don’t Waste Time Calling Your Doctor — My Own Doctor Said Call 911

I called my own private practitioner at Heritage Medical and asked a nurse what I should have done and was told to call 911 if I found myself choking on honey again. I explained I had Googled and called clinics and no one had advice on how to dislodge honey and asked if there was not a good way to get the honey out. The nurse replied, “No, not really.”

What to Do if You Get Honey in Your Windpipe — Here is My Best Advice

Honey can completely block your airway. It is not an object which can be expelled by coughing or the Heimlich Maneuver. A complete blockage of the airway like I had at first may lead to death.

The steps which worked for me which I feel comfortable passing along were:

• 1. Don’t panic
• 2. Call 911 immediately if you can’t draw air or speak
• 3. Don’t eat or drink anything to try to get the honey out. You could be adding MORE blockage.
• 4. Don’t waste your time calling your doctor, clinics or emergency rooms. If you can’t draw air, you can’t speak and these places can’t help you anyway.
• 5. Unless my own articles rank on Google, there is nothing there about choking on honey, so don’t waste your time on Google.
• 6. DON’T LET YOUR KIDS SQUIRT HONEY INTO THEIR MOUTHS. Don’t you do it, either.

The EMTs arrived quickly. I would never have been able to drive to the emergency room in the shape I was in. Yes, it was a little embarrassing that by the time they got here, I had expelled just enough of the honey to be able to draw air in and out, but it could have very easily gone the other way had more honey been in my windpipe or had I drawn it deeper down my airways or had I panicked. Had I waited and the situation gotten worse, it could have very easily killed me or caused brain damage. By calling when I did, the EMTS would have gotten to me before I reached that point. The 911 operator stayed with me until the EMTs arrived, so she could have told them had I passed out. 911 seems to be your only and best medical option if you are choking on honey.

One last cautionary note is that if I did get any honey into my lungs, it could cause worse problems. After any choking incident, you should seek emergency attention if you experience bleeding from your mouth or if you develop a fever within 48 hours, as this could indicate pneumonia. www.livestrong.com

What Is Celiac Disease?

According to the Mayo Clinic, celiac disease is a digestive condition triggered by ingesting the protein gluten, which is typically found in bread, pasta, cookies, pizza crust and other foods containing wheat, barley or rye. Since some skin care products and shampoos contain gluten, there is a small debate among those with celiac disease as to whether or not skin care products containing gluten should be used. This begs the questions: Are skin care products with gluten harmful and do Rodan + Fields products contain gluten?

Michael F. Picco, M.D. of the Mayo Clinic says that typically, gluten-containing skin care products and cosmetics aren’t a problem unless they are accidentally swallowed, so it is best for those with celiac disease not to use products containing gluten around the lips and mouth. Even those with a form of celiac disease called dermatitis herpetiformis (DH), develop the itchy, blistering rash due to ingesting gluten, not from applying it topically.
